“Maybe the lights are still in working order.” Nox and Felicia parked his retrieved vehicle among the overgrown trees and shrubs on the edge of the property and made their way to the decaying mansion.

“If not, we both see in the dark okay.” Felicia shivered.

“You cold, Poppet?”

“Just tired. I’m sorry things are so up and down with me. I was all ‘grrr, sexy badass chick’ and then I went all ‘scared, whiny girl’.”

“Do you remember the poor sap who was cowerin’ on the bathroom floor this afternoon and who then turned into Mr. Predator tonight?” Nox laughed. “This is us, Luv. Two for the price of one in both of us. Plus-” he shouldered open the creaking door, “ we’ve got the unfortunate side effect of the past seepin’ into our new reality very slowly. Bloody annoyin’, if you ask me.”

“Very bloody annoying.” Felicia grinned and shut the door after them. “Hideout sweet hideout.” She shivered again, this time from overtiredness and feeling chilled. Felicia put her duffle bag down with an annoyed thud. Apparently, a week and a half ago she’d been living happily in the dorms with a nice home to go home to at her mother’s. Now, she lived out of a suitcase and had spent the week in a combination of caves, hotel rooms, in her mother’s house as a fugitive, and now an abandoned, half-burned mansionette. She gave the bag a little kick.

Nox looked at her. “Bag been givin’ you some lip?”

“I had a house. A home. So did you. Now we have two bags and a lot of annoying crap we don’t remember,” she huffed.

“Still got your home.” Nox reminded her. “Wherever we’re together, that’s gonna be home.” Even in the dark he still found her face easily, and stroked her cheeks with his hardened fingertips. “I’ve still got you. That means everything to me, Poppet.”

“I know. It means everything to have you, too. I’m just so tired of being worried and trying to do what we’re supposed to do all the time. Being me sucks.”

“Bein’ a vampire isn’t much better. ‘Specially not a reformed one.” Nox sighed.

They walked up the stairs and found the room Nox had used. It was dirty and littered with remains of his hasty sleeping and hunting cycles, cigarette butts and empty bottles. Without speaking, they moved down to another room and hoped for something better. Finally, in a room at the end of the hall, they found a large bed covered in a drop sheet, the only piece of furniture in a drafty room. Felicia’s hand groped around beside the doorway and flipped the switch with a feeling of futility. With a snap, an overhead light came on, a single flickering bulb in a half-broken glass globe.

“Well! That’s a bit of a miracle.” Nox looked pleased and began to shrug out of his long duster.

“Want to go and see if we can get two in a row? I could use a long, hot bath.” Felicia hit another switch as she and Nox found a bathroom at the end of the hall.
